Vitamins: Which Ones Are OK to Take? - Patch.com

There have been many articles written on vitamins and their benefits. Yet no one tells you which vitamins are best for you.

Background, gender, health,  prescription medications you may be on, your age, medical condition, pregnancy or maybe whether you are a vegetarian or not all factor into what vitamins are best for you..

Enter Frank Stanford, who manages the GNC vitamin store in the Village Shoppes.

"Some things are more important when you are younger and other things when you are older," said Stanford. "There are so many factors that would determine which vitamins are right for you. Age is a primary factor as well as your medical condition. You really have to speak with your primary physician about what's right for you as well as a pharmacist who can assist you based on what medications that you are presently taking.

"A good multi vitamin/mineral supplement is thought to provide nutrients that may be missing in one's diet. This is independent of age and most other factors."

"Folic Acid and iron for women who are pregnant or of child bearing years, B-12 for vegetarians and people over 50, everyone needs calcium, D-3 for post menopausal women along with calcium," continued Stanford.

The Acai Berry drinks and pills which were all the rage recently, do no more than blueberries. Both are wonderful anti-oxidents but they do not help you lose weight.

Stanford suggests finding web pages on the internet that are not selling a product to you. Look up the scientific evidence. Vitamin C is one of the best vitamins that you can take.
