Potato Contains More Nutrients, Vitamins and Minerals than Many 'Superfoods ... - Medical Daily

The potato, the root which is often avoided by dieters who consider it fattening, has actually been deemed by some researchers as a wonder food that has more vitamins minerals and nutrients than traditional ‘superfoods’ avocado, bananas, beetroot, broccoli and nuts combined.

Scientists say just one medium baked potato contains five-and-a-half times as much fiber as a banana, and more vitamin C than three avocados, according to the Daily Express.

Additionally, potatoes contain more of the mineral selenium, a trace mineral that merges with proteins to make selenoproteins, important antioxidant enzymes that protect the body from free radicals that can damage cells and lead to chronic diseases, than seed and nut products, like peanut butter.

Contrary to popular belief that eating potatoes will lead to weight gain, researchers found in a separate study conducted last year that eating this popular staple food not only doesn’t put on weight, but can also lower blood pressure.

The latest study was conducted by Sigrid Gibson, an independent nutritionist and data analyst, on behalf of the Potato Council that developed a mobile phone app which compares nutrients in potatoes to other traditional superfoods.

Gibson analyzed the food intake records of 876 children and 948 adults who were part of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey program in the UK.

“Broccoli is a good source of folate [Vitamin B9] but the data shows potatoes provide more of this vitamin to the diet overall and also the important minerals iron and magnesium some children lack,” Gibson said, according to UK newspaper.

“Similarly we think of bananas as being a good source of potassium, and they are, but potatoes make a more significant contribution in the diet,” she added.

“It is important to have a wide variety of foods in your diet but sometimes our heads are turned by new things and we underestimate old favorites like potatoes and how they compare to other, often more expensive ‘superfoods’,” Sian Porter, the Potato Council's consultant dietitian, told the Daily Express.

The Gluten Free Society Talks About Vitamin Contamination - Danbury News Times

One doctor is helping individuals, who are leading a gluten-free lifestyle, learn about contamination issues with vitamin and mineral supplements.

(PRWEB) June 24, 2012

The Gluten Free Society is launching an awareness campaign. Currently, there are over twelve million websites dedicated to the topic of gluten contamination in relation to vitamin and mineral supplements. In an effort to educate all Americans on the importance of reading labels, especially when it comes to vitamins and minerals, the Gluten Free Society has dedicated a page of its website to the issue.

“Multiple studies have shown the relationship between vitamin and mineral deficiencies and gluten intolerance and celiac disease. It is well established that damage to the intestinal cells can lead to malabsorption and poor digestion,” says Dr. Peter Osborne of the Gluten Free Society. “I decided to dedicate a page on the society’s website to this issue because most people don’t realize vitamin and mineral supplements contain fillers. One in 133 Americans have Celiac disease. Since people don’t associate vitamins as potentially harmful, gluten contaminated supplements can really do damage to a person’s health!”

The Gluten Free Society’s page offers an informative synopsis of the major product label terms concealing what really is gluten. Access to the website is 100% free and confidential. Celiac disease can lead to a number of other disorders including infertility, reduced bone density, neurological disorders, some cancers, and other autoimmune diseases. The Gluten Free Society’s awareness campaign is meant to inform consumers on the issue of gluten contamination, how to read labels, and also to provide social media sharing tools.

The Gluten Free Society lends its support to research endeavors revolving around grains, gluten, lectins, and other compounds within grain that may harm human health. The organization provides an ongoing analysis and commentary of research performed in the field of food sensitivity/intolerance. Members of the media can contact Helene Vece of JumpStart Ink and Media Manager for the Gluten Free Society to request an interview with Dr. Peter Osborne.

Period and Period Symptom Treatment Finds Relief with Period Vitamin - San Francisco Chronicle

There are many symptoms associated with PMS and PMS like symptoms. Period Vitamin’s second release of their revolutionary product helps women find relief all month long with various PMS symptoms.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 29, 2012

Today, Period Vitamin announces the release of their second formula of their popular period pain relief and PMS symptom reduction supplement.

The first version of Period Vitamin gained wide spread popularity and notoriety for its ability to reduce the effects of PMS in women. The second version is sure to provide greater results and bring PMS relief to a larger spectrum of women everywhere.

There are many symptoms of PMS that plague women. Sometimes these symptoms come without a period as well. With the success of their first PMS relief product, Period Vitamin is excited to announce a second formulation that fights these symptoms more effectively and easily than ever before.

Period Vitamin utilizes hormone stabilization to prevent weight gain during periods, PMS depression, and breast soreness before a period. Period Vitamin uses Evening Primrose to tackle breast soreness, Vitamin E to help with PMS depression and calcium to prevent weight gain.

The medical community has overlooked the complaints of women for many years. Research money is not longer being put towards PMS relief. Period Vitamin wanted to change that by providing all-natural PMS treatments by providing the adequate levels of herbs, minerals, and vitamins that are safe and natural for PMS relief.

It is also not uncommon for women to experience cramps with no period or other period pains with no period. These can occur at any time in the month and are often a result of nutritional deficiencies. By taking Period Vitamin all month long, these pains and cramps can be reduced.

These natural remedies are backed by double-blind studies that are conducted in many research trials. The ingredients in Period Vitamin are shown to work just as effectively as over-the-counter medications without the side effects.

Period Vitamin has all of the benefits of a multi-vitamin but also the minerals and herbs that are needed to target hormone fluctuations around the time of PMS. This is why Period Vitamin is considered to be a hormone balancer. This means that as hormones fluctuate around the time of a period, vitamin, herb and mineral levels fall. This deficiency causes PMS symptoms to occur.

By keeping the required vitamin, mineral, and herb levels up, PMS symptoms cannot occur.

Period Vitamin leads the creation of the class of supplements called hormone stabilizers. By taking Period Vitamin all month long, it is not possible for the required nutrient levels to fall and PMS symptoms stay away.

Period Vitamin incorporated Cramp Bark, White Willow Bark, and Vitamin B to help relieve menstrual cramps. All of these ingredients have been proven to provide natural pain relief and inflammation relief to provide remedies for menstrual cramps.

Without using filler, animal by-products, or preservatives, Period Vitamin is able to stand behind their claims of being all natural and high quality. Period Vitamin only utilizes herbs, vitamins and minerals that are naturally occurring. No synthetic materials are used in Period Vitamin.

The Women’s Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine found that menstrual cycles can be regulated with the use of various herbs including Chaste Berry, one of the key ingredients in Period Vitamin. This ingredient provides women with lighter periods with less menstrual cramping.

The College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University in Canada, conducted a study in 2009 that found ten vitamins and herbs that are able to treat the symptoms of PMS including PMS depression and weight gain during periods.

After finding updated research on herbs, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to the reduction of PMS symptoms, Period Vitamin decided to reformulate their popular product to make it even more beneficial to women. They increased levels of certain vitamins, included new herbs and minerals, and now are able to provide women with the PMS relief they are seeking.

Not only is Period Vitamin beneficial during PMS, it is helpful to women’s health all month long. Being balanced nutritional supplement, Period Vitamin provides women with a dietary supplement that keeps their nutritional levels higher. It also helps to fight PMS symptoms that occur in between periods like cramping.

Period vitamin sought to provide women with symptom-free periods all month long while giving them the nutrition they need. Period Vitamin provides a safe, healthy alternative to other medications on the market by combing the PMS fighting herbs and minerals to the nutritional requirements of a multi-vitamin.

With the first release of Period Vitamin, they found unbelievable success at regulating the hormone fluctuations in women. The second formulation of Period Vitamin is sure to create even greater benefits for women everywhere.

More information about Period Vitamin is available at http://www.PeriodVitamin.com. Period Vitamin is available for sale on the website with free shipping and a 100% money back guarantee if you do not get the results you want from Period Vitamin.

About Period Vitamin:

Period Vitamin was founded in 2008 by women seeking to better women’s health through all natural PMS relief. They are a web-based business out of Chicago, Illinois. With a goal of creating symptom-free periods every month, Period Vitamin created an entirely new market for supplements and a new class of hormone stabilizers sure to change the way women see PMS.

Minerals and Vitamins for beef cows: Making it all balance - CattleNetwork.com

Kevin Gould, Michigan State University Extension   |   Updated: June 27, 2012

Adequate mineral and vitamin nutrition is vital for optimizing animal growth, lactation, reproduction and immune response. Once the mineral status of the animal drops below threshold levels, it may affect response to vaccination, immunity to disease and parasite challenges and growth. Michigan State University has done excellent work formulating beef cow mineral and vitamin recommendations.

When selecting a commercially manufactured supplement mix, it is important to note not only the concentration of minerals but also their source. Mineral sources vary in bioavailability, or how much of the mineral can be absorbed and utilized. For example, copper sulfate is well utilized by cattle, whereas copper oxide has nearly zero availability. Various sources and their relative bioavailability are given for comparison in the bulletin referenced below. Be sure to read feed tags carefully. Cost should not be the sole consideration.

Vitamins in a mineral and vitamin supplement will lose their potency over time. For this reason, it’s important to keep mineral and vitamin supplements fresh, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. Only as much supplement as can be consumed in a 90-day period should be purchased or mixed at one time. You may want to check with your feed manufacturer to verify the date on which the supplement was made.

Managers should record the amount and date of mineral feeding so consumption can be monitored. Most mineral mixes have specific consumption goals. Intake will vary depending on previous mineral and vitamin feeding, current feed sources, cow production stage, weather conditions, etc. Keeping supplements dry and readily accessible will encourage normal consumption. Expect to spend $20-30/cow-calf pair/year for a high quality mineral and vitamin program.

For more detailed information about mineral-vitamin management for your beef cattle enterprise, visit the MSU Beef Team website. Search under the “Nutrition” tab for the following bulletin: Extension Bulletin E-2810 “Upper Midwest Beef Cow Mineral-Vitamin Nutrition”. You may also email me directly at gouldk@msu.edu.

Vitamin D tests are inaccurate - sciencecodex.com

MAYWOOD, Il. -- Blood tests to measure vitamin D deficiency are among the most frequently ordered tests in medicine.

But a Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine study of two new vitamin D tests found the kits are inaccurate in many cases. Earle W. Holmes, PhD, presented findings at ENDO 2012, the 94th Annual Meeting and Expo in Houston.

Holmes and colleagues examined how well the two new tests, Abbott Architect and Siemans Centaur2, performed on 163 randomly selected blood samples. In 40 percent of the Abbott Architect specimens and 48 percent of the Siemans Centaur2 specimens, results were at least 25 percent too high or 25 percent too low. (The maximum recommended total allowable error is plus-or-minus 25 percent.)

"There has been an exponential increase in the number of vitamin D tests ordered for patients," Holmes said. "But our study of two newly approved tests showed they had pretty poor performance."

The study by Holmes and colleagues included 163 specimens -- 123 from women (median age 54) and 40 from men (median age 59). Researchers used the two new test kits on the specimens, and compared results with findings from a gold standard method called LCMS, which has been shown to provide accurate vitamin D measurements. (LCMS stands for liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry.)

The new tests tended to overestimate vitamin D deficiency. According to the LCMS measurements, 33 of the 163 specimens showed vitamin D deficiency. But the Abbott test showed that 45 specimens had vitamin D deficiency and the Siemens test showed that 71 subjects had vitamin D deficiency. Such inaccuracies could lead to overtreatment of vitamin D deficiency, Holmes said.

Holmes said inaccurate test results could lead to misdiagnoses of patients and confound efforts of physicians, nutritionists and researchers to identify the optimal levels of vitamin D for good health.

People get vitamin D from their diet, from exposure to the sun and from supplements. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, which is needed for strong bones. Vitamin D helps increase bone density and decrease fractures. Recent studies have found vitamin D also may decrease the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Populations that may be at high risk for vitamin D deficiency include the elderly, people who are obese, babies who are exclusively breast fed and people who don't get enough sun.

It looks like sweetener, but FAU's packet is for your health - Sun Sentinel

Steven Sponder (Mark Randall, Mark Randall,…)

June 26, 2012|By Scott Travis and Ed Komenda, Sun Sentinel

Next to the familiar pink, blue and yellow sweeteners at Florida Atlantic University's coffee shops sits a new green assortment with a surprising message: taste free.

What's sweet about Vplenish, a product invented on campus, is not the taste, but the health benefits, according to its founder, Steven Sponder, 49, of Boca Raton, and some student samplers.

Vplenish is a liquid-dissolving vitamin boost, featuring a blend of C, B6, B12, and D, as well as zinc, antioxidants and electrolytes. It provides 20 percent of a person's recommended daily vitamins, said Spondor, who came up with the idea in 2008 after he was tired of taking large vitamin pills.

"I was at Starbucks and forgot to take my nasty pill, when I had an epiphany. Everyone was tearing open sweetener packets," he said.

He hired scientists who found a way to use a micro-encapsulated coating to remove any undesirable taste.

The packets are now available at every eatery at FAU, as well as the gym and at catered events.

FAU senior Damien Stevens, 24, of Coral Springs, spreads Vplenish on his corn flakes and mixes it with orange juice and coffee.

"You can put it on any food or drink, and it doesn't taste like anything," Stevens said. "I've never seen a vitamin like that."

Juan Montoya, 23, sprinkled a packet of Vplenish on his chicken sandwich at his Boca Raton home.

"I used to take a multi-vitamin pill, but I'd always forget," Montoya said. "This is much easier."

Vplenish has been inspected by the Food and Drug Administration and meets all regulations, Sponder said. It's also been certified as kosher.

A few Boca Raton restaurants off campus are making it available and people can buy a pack of 2,000 for $19.95 at Amazon.com. It should be available at retail stores and wholesale clubs next year, Sponder said.

His next step will be to target other Florida universities, Sponder said.

"We're hoping this will be the next Gatorade," he said

Why vitamin supplements are good for you - Inquirer.net (blog)

What are vitamins and minerals?

Vitamins are natural organic compounds that are needed in order to support normal physiological processes within our body. There are 13 essential vitamins needed in small amounts to carry out normal daily functions. They are essential because our body simply can’t produce enough vitamins in sufficient quantities to support cellular demand.

That is why it is crucial we get those vitamins from our diet.  Vitamins are generally classified as either fat-soluble or water-soluble.

The 13 essential vitamins are A, C, D, E, K, and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folate).

Minerals are inorganic compounds that are necessary, like vitamins, for the body to carry out normal physiological functions. Minerals are much simpler in chemical form and are relatively more stable compared to vitamins, which can be destroyed from exposure to heat, chemical reactions or even sunlight.

There are essential minerals that our body needs as well through our diet, and they are generally classified as macro-minerals or micro-minerals, depending on the amount needed. Some essential minerals include calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc and iodine.

Not a replacement

Why use a multivitamin mineral supplement?

First and foremost, a multivitamin/mineral supplement is not a replacement for a proper diet. Supplements are only necessary to ensure adequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals that are not acquired through diet alone. Always consult your physician, as overdosing on certain vitamins and minerals can lead to toxicity, which can cause havoc on your body.

Your goal should always be to get your essential nutrients from your diet. A healthy diet should be rich in vegetables and fruits. However, sometimes you will not be able to get all the nutrients from food alone.

Inadequate nutrient intake may arise from sickness; stress (including stress from exercising); poor quality of fruits and vegetables (due to poor nutrients in soil and environment grown); or you just can’t eat enough (veggies, especially, are quite filling).

Situations like these may require supplementation. If you are going to supplement, make sure the multivitamin/mineral supplement is derived from whole food sources; that it contains natural forms of vitamins instead of synthetic form, like in the case of vitamin E; that it falls within the recommended nutritional dosage, and if it doesn’t, that the dosage is not anywhere near toxic levels.

Fish oils

Fish oils are oil from fish, and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is particularly rich in EPA and DHA, which are forms of omega-3 fatty acids. They are important for cardiovascular and brain/nervous system health. Like vitamins/minerals, deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to certain health problems such as memory loss.

Our cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer.  Fats, especially omega-3, help maintain the integrity of that membrane, which leads to better transfer of nutrients into and out of the cell. If you have a poor cell membrane it will be more difficult to transport nutrients across the cell.

It’s easier to get omega-6 fats because generally they are in the plants and animals we eat.  Food such as various types of plant oils, meats and processed food contain omega 6 fatty acids.

The major problem of our current diet is that we eat way too much omega-6 in comparison to omega-3. If your diet includes lots of meat, processed food (think corn beef), and fast food, then you are probably ingesting way more omega-6 fats than you need. Like anything in life, there has to be balance.

Fish over meat

I’m a big advocate of getting most if not all nutrients from food. Eating about one to two  fish servings per week (113 g or 4 oz = 1 serving size) is what most health experts recommend.  However, eating more servings is perfectly fine especially as a protein source. It is a great idea to substitute fish for meats because fish generally have less saturated fat and fewer calories per serving when comparing to meat.

If you are unable to get enough omega-3s from your diet, supplementation may be a viable option. However, always consult your physician before starting any fish oil supplements. I prefer taking the liquid form compared to the capsule form because it’s quick and easy. If you want to avoid the fishy taste of the liquid version, capsules are great options as well. You may need to take more than one capsule, though, to get the proper amount.

Research studies have found that positive effects of omega-3 supplementation used dosages of 5 g or more. But do follow the instructions on the label.

World Must Change the Game to End Malnutrition - AllAfrica.com

Global leaders and experts need to integrate biofortification and other available options to fight the menace of vitamin and mineral deficiencies that is afflicting the poor, says the Director-General of HarvestPlus, Dr. Howarth Bouis.

A statement issued by the HarvestPlus and made available to Daily Trust said that currently, the most common interventions being used in fighting vitamin and mineral deficiencies include dietary diversity, fortification of staples such as flour and sugar, and supplementation. While increasing dietary diversity is an ideal longer-term solution; that requires increases in income. Fortification and supplementation on the other hand are relatively expensive, with supplementation with vitamin and mineral capsules alone receiving an estimated $5 billion per year.

"Biofortification therefore provides a more cost-effective, cheaper, and easier access to these nutrients, and integrating it in current crop improvement efforts could have more impact," says Bouis in a meeting with the Director General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Dr. Nteranya Sanginga.

Generally, in the developing countries, vitamin A deficiency, for instance, remains a major bottleneck to improved nutrition with approximately 250,000 to 500,000 malnourished children going blind each year, and half of whom die within a year of becoming blind.

In Nigeria, vitamin A deficiency afflicts almost 20% of pregnant women and about 30% of children under five. Apart from lowering immunity, vitamin A deficiency results in economic losses in gross domestic product of about $1.5 billion, according to the Nigerian government estimates.

Bouis says, "Unless we are willing to change the way we play the game, we cannot win the battle against malnutrition."

Last year, the Nigerian Varietal Release Committee released three provitamin A cassava varieties that are yellowish in color to help fight vitamin A deficiency.

The development of the varieties was led by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture using conventional breeding methods with funding support from HarvestPlus. The National Root Crops Research Institute in Umudike was the Nigerian partner.

Herbs have many healthy benefits - Richmond Times Dispatch

Herbs contain unique antioxidants (antioxidants act as scavengers to clean up the free radicals of metabolism and other environmental toxins such as smoke and pesticides in the body), essential oils, vitamins, phytosterols and many other plant-derived nutrient substances.

These nutritional substances help equip the body to fight against germs, toxins and to boost immunity levels. Let's look at some of the health benefits of common herbs.

  • Basil: Basil leaves contain beneficial essential oils that are known to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Basil is very low in calories. It is a rich source of many essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Basil contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene (vitamin A). It also has Zeaxanthin, a yellow flavonoid carotenoid compound that is absorbed into the retina, where it can filter harmful UV rays from reaching the retina. Basil, an excellent source of iron, also contains good amount of minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium.
  • Parsley: This herb contains no cholesterol and is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, which helps control cholesterol and prevents constipation. It is also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and lutein. Parsley leaves are rich in pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5) Riboflavin (vitamin B-12) niacin (vitamin B-3) pyridoxine (Vitamin B-6) and thiamin (vitamin B-1). It is a rich source of vitamin K, which plays a role in bone health and in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease by limiting neuronal damage.
  • Sage: Sage has many medicinal properties. It is a stimulant, a diuretic and an expectorant. It boosts memory and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial as well as anxiolytic (reduces anxiety) properties, according to HolisticHerbalist.com. In addition, it provides antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic effects. Because of these characteristics of sage, sage tea provides many health benefits; it may also help with menopausal symptoms.
  • Thyme: Thyme contains an essential oil that is rich in thymol, a powerful antiseptic, antibacterial and a strong antioxidant. The oil of thyme is used in mouthwashes to treat inflammations of the mouth and throat infections. It is a common component of cough drops.

New Content from Liquid Health

http://www.liquidhealthinc.com/node/105 Prostate Health: things to know
According to WebMD.com /*“Prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer
among men”*/ – if that wasn’t scary enough, there are no real known
symptoms of prostate cancer, until the cancer is pretty developed. The
promising thing is that when prostate cancer is detected early on, before it
has a chance to spread to other parts of the body, it’s fairly treatable.
According to the National Cancer Institute, local prostate cancer (meaning
cancer that hasn’t spread beyond the prostate) makes up 4 out of 5 prostate
cancer diagnoses. Factors that increase your risk of developing prostate
cancer include age (this cancer is most common among men over the age of 65),
having a family history of prostate cancer, being obese and, for unknown
reasons, African American men are more likely than their counterparts to
develop this form of cancer. While there is no official way to prevent
prostate cancer, there are lifestyle choices that can be made to reduce your
likelihood of developing it. Although there are no symptoms of actual
prostate cancer, there are signs to watch for that signal a problem in your
prostate. If you need to pee a lot (especially during the night), leak urine
when you laugh or cough, are unable to pee standing up, feel pain or a
burning sensation when you pee, notice blood in your semen or urine, have a
hard time starting or stopping your flow of urine or have a weak urinary
stream you may have a growth that is causing a blockage in your prostate. If
you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consult your doctor
right away to determine what the cause is. Because instances of prostate
cancer are lower in countries that eat less red meats and high fat foods, it
stands to reason that eliminating these things from your diet might decrease
your chances of developing prostate cancer. Mayo Clinic suggests increasing
your intake of lycopene, stating, /“one nutrient that is consistently
linked to prostate cancer prevention is lycopene, which can be found in raw
or cooked tomatoes.”/ Mayo Clinic also suggests exercising regularly and
maintaining a healthy weight [1] as other ways to try and prevent prostate
cancer. Their website says /“There is some evidence that the men who get
the most exercise have a lower incidence of prostate cancer when compared
with men who get little or no exercise.”/ One of the most important things
you can do to maintain good prostate health [2], is to see your doctor
regularly, never ignore potential warning signs, and get proper testing done,
as you get older. There are medications available that may decrease your risk
of developing prostate cancer. Another reason to work closely with your
doctor on this matter is that the ability to detect this cancer early on, if
it does start to develop, greatly increases the chances of eradicating the
cancer.

Novel Form of Vitamin B3 May Prevent Obesity - Food Product Design

NEW YORKâ€"New research published in the journal Cell Metabolism found high doses of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a novel form of vitamin B3 that is found in small quantities of milk, may be a new weapon in the fight against obesity. The findings suggest NR prevents obesity in mice that are fed a fatty diet, and also increases muscle performance, improves energy expenditure and prevents diabetes development, all without side effects.

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Researchers at Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, performed the mouse experiments, while the ability to give the animals sufficient doses of NR was made possible by Weill Cornell Medical College researchers, who played key roles in uncovering the biological story of NR.

The researchers found mice on a high-fat diet supplemented with NR gained significantly less weight (60%) than mice fed the same diet without NR, even though the mice supplemented with NR ate the same amount of food as mice on the high fat diet not treated with NR. They had improved energy. They were in better shape than the untreated mice, with significantly better endurance and stronger muscles. Additionally, none of the treated mice developed diabetes, as seen in the untreated mice on the high fat diet. And when fed a normal diet, NR treated mice had improved sensitivity to insulin. The NR treated mice also showed lower cholesterol levels. All of these benefits came without toxicity.

The researchers also reported NR added to mammalian cells and mouse tissues increases nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels, which activates sirtuin 1 and sirtuin 3 enzymes, culminating in enhanced oxidative metabolism and protection against high-fat diet-induced metabolic abnormalities. NAD allows sugars, fats and proteins to be converted into energy. Sirtuins are known to mimic a low-calorie diet and extend the lifespan of many organisms.

"This study is very important. It shows that in animals, the use of NR offers the health benefits of a low-calorie diet and exerciseâ€"without doing either one," said Dr. Anthony Sauve, associate professor of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College. "The bottom line is that NR improves the function of mitochondria, the cell's energy factories. Mitochondrial decline is the hallmark of many diseases associated with aging, such as cancer and neurodegeneration, and NR supplementation boosts mitochondrial functioning."

Four Ways to Prepare Nutrient-Dense Asparagus - Patch.com

Michigan is third in the nation for asparagus production. Michigan produces up to 25 million pounds of asparagus annually.

The season for asparagus lasts only six to seven weeks during early spring and summer. It is a very nutrient-dense food, meaning it is full of important vitamins and minerals. Asparagus is high in folic acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin C and thiamin. In addition, it contains no fat, cholesterol and very little sodium.

When choosing fresh asparagus, look for straight, firm stalks with tight tips. Trim the stem ends about a quarter of an inch and wash in warm water several times. To store fresh asparagus, wash and pat dry thoroughly, wrap in plastic bag for up to three days and store in the refrigerator.

To freeze fresh asparagus, select young tender stalks. Wash completely and cut in to even lengths. Water blanch; exposing vegetable to boiling water or steam for a brief period of time to stop ripening. Immerse cut asparagus into boiling water; small spears for two minutes, medium spears for three minutes and large spears for four minutes. Immediately cool in ice water to prevent cooking. Drain, package and freeze.

Here are four ways to prepare asparagus:

  1. Trim and cut asparagus. Steam stalks first, adding the tips in for the final two to three minutes. Drain. Toss with melted butter or olive oil, freshly cracked pepper and fresh lemon.
  2. Mix the above steamed asparagus with angel hair pasta and add grated parmesan cheese.
  3. Steam asparagus and use in an omelet. Beat two eggs with two tablespoons hot water; add a dash of pepper and salt. Put egg mixture into heated non-stick pan, lay in cooked asparagus. Fold omelet in half to finish cooking until eggs are firm.
  4. Roast asparagus in oven. Trim and leave stalks whole. Toss with olive oil to lightly coat. Put in a 400ËšF oven and turn several time for about 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

Enjoy this versatile and delicious vegetable many ways during its short but sweet season!

Vitamins, minerals and nutrients decoded for vegans and vegetarians - Mother Nature Network

An explanation and comparison of macro- and micro-nutrients.

And what about vitamins and minerals? Do vegetarians and vegans need to supplement? What are the best sources of calcium? What’s all the hype about vitamin D?
Keep reading to find out the answers to these questions and more!
Macro-Nutrients:
Macro-nutrients are those that provide energy (calories), and include carbohydrates, protein and fat. A summary of each macro-nutrient is provided below:
  • Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy
  • Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram
  • Whole grains, fruits, and starchy vegetables are good sources
  • Dietary fat helps provide a sense of satiety after eating, and aids in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K
  • Fat provides 9 calories per gram â€" it is the most energy-dense macro-nutrient
  • Vegan sources include nuts and nut butter, seeds, avocado, coconut, and plant-based oils
Most diet plans â€" whether for weight loss, a food allergy, or ethical concerns, tend to over-emphasize the importance of macro-nutrients and under-emphasize micro-nutrients. While it is important to ensure that you consume adequate amounts of each macro-nutrient, doing so is easily achieved for most people by eating a varied diet with an appropriate overall caloric intake.
What’s more important for many people is taking care to evenly distribute their nutrient intake throughout the day.  In particular, limiting the quantity of protein and/or fat eaten in one sitting can improve digestion and help reduce stomach upset.
Very dense protein sources, especially those that are also high in saturated fat, are extremely difficult to digest. This is one reason to avoid meat and other animal products.
You may also find that eating a lot of fat at a single meal causes digestive problems or just a general feeling of heaviness, or that you feel better by avoiding certain sources of fat, such as fatty meats or dairy products.
Micro-Nutrients:
Diet quality and nutrient density are the most important considerations for overall health, well-being and maintaining a healthy weight. Although there are a number of sophisticated and often complicated systems for measuring diet quality (e.g. ANDI and other food rating scores), focusing on whole, unprocessed foods is the best way to ensure that your diet is nutrient-dense. Whole foods are closest to their natural form and are therefore rich in nutrients and free of unhealthy, unnatural additives.
Foods with the greatest nutrient density (from most to least dense) include:
  • Raw leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and mixed salad greens
  • Solid green vegetables, such as broccoli, asparagus, snap peas and Brussels sprouts
  • Non-green, non-starchy vegetables, such as beets, carrots, cauliflower and onions
  • Starchy vegetables, such as winter squash, yams and potatoes
  • Whole grains, such as quinoa, brown rice and teff
For optimal health, the foods listed above should form the basis of your diet. Meat, eggs, dairy and refined foods such as chips, cookies, crackers, white rice, and refined oils have extremely low nutrient density scores and should be limited or avoided.
Vitamins and Minerals:
In theory, vitamin and mineral supplements should not be necessary if your caloric intake is adequate and your diet includes a variety of whole foods. However, individual vitamin and mineral needs vary with age, gender, activity level, season, and climate.
A simple blood test can tell you a lot about your nutritional status, and is probably a good idea before beginning any supplement. With any supplementation regimen, tracking your levels over time is useful for ensuring your nutrition needs are met.
For example, your vitamin D level may be adequate during summer months when your sun exposure is greater, but may drop below a healthy range during the winter months. In this case, seasonal vitamin D supplementation would be beneficial.
The most common vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially for vegetarians and vegans, are in iron, calcium, vitamin D and B12. Some plant-based sources of these vitamins and minerals are summarized below:
Levels of each of these nutrients should be monitored using a blood test in an annual (or more frequent) check-up to ensure optimal levels.

Period Vitamin Provides PMS Herbal Remedy for Women - Houston Chronicle

The newest version of Period Vitamin provides a PMS herbal remedy that is safe and effective for women everywhere by providing nutrients women need and the PMS relief they want.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 20, 2012

The second version of Period Vitamin is set to be released soon and provides women with PMS relief and gets rid of period pain for good. Period Vitamin seeks to relieve women of PMS pain with an herbal treatment that is all natural and safe.

Period Vitamin sought to bring PMS relief to all women with a natural remedy that helps to provide balanced nutrition. To goal is to balance hormone levels using natural, safe ingredients that are going to add to women’s health and nutrition. Period Vitamin succeeded with their first product release and have now reformulated it to make it more beneficial to women’s health and provided ways for how to reduce PMS.

Every year, thousands of women go to the doctor asking about how to get rid of period cramps and how to get rid of period bloating. There has been a halt to research to answer these questions for women. Often times doctors associate these symptoms with regular menstruation and cannot provide any answer. Period Vitamin set a new standard for natural period cramping and bloating relief where doctors and researchers have failed.

Period Vitamin utilizes only natural ingredients that come from reputable, natural suppliers and their product is supported by clinical research studies that prove the value of natural remedies for PMS relief. By making sure only the most high quality natural ingredients are used, Period Vitamin can guarantee a safe product that will eliminate PMS symptoms for women.

Period Vitamin falls into a class of products called hormone stabilizers. The ingredients in Period Vitamin are designed to keep levels of vitamins, minerals and herbs up when hormone levels change.

When hormone levels in the body fluctuate, there is a decrease in vitamins, minerals and herbs that the body needs to prevent PMS. When these levels decrease, women experience period bloating, period back pain, and premenstrual tension. By regulating these vitamin, herb, and mineral levels and keeping the levels up where they need to be, these symptoms are unable to happen.

This is why Period Vitamin classifies as a hormone balancer. It keeps the levels of herbs, vitamins and minerals at levels the body needs so that PMS symptoms cannot occur. The newest version of Period Vitamin is hitting the market soon and it is better formulated to get rid of period pain.

There are many over-the-counter products on the market that are designed to fight period bloating and period back pain, but none are herbal PMS remedies and many come with adverse side effects and are expensive. Period Vitamin provides that herbal remedy that is all natural and does not have the side effects of other medications. Period Vitamin utilizes the highest level of quality standards to make sure their product is safe for women.

Nature’s Field is an online journal for natural supply distributors. This journal has proven that cramp bark is an herb that has been used for centuries to reduce the effects of intestinal distress and colic. More recently the herb was proven to reduce the effects of menstrual cramping.

A second journal called Advances in Therapy found that cramp bark is effective at reducing the pain associated with child birth. This means that the ingredients in Period Vitamin are not only recommended for getting rid of period cramps, but also safe to take as it can be administered during child birth to help mitigate pain.

Cramp bark is one of the natural ingredients that Period Vitamin has included into the second formulation of the vitamin. Period Vitamin not only added cramp bark, but they also added many other vitamins, herbs and minerals to get a higher level of nutritional value for women’s needs.

By providing the ingredients of a multi-vitamin and the natural, herbal PMS remedies for PMS, Period Vitamin is able to create a safe, nutritionally sound supplement that is able to be taken all month long to balance hormone levels during PMS and provide nutrition that is balanced for women’s requirements.

This new Period Vitamin product release allows women to experience symptom-free period every month. Period Vitamin achieved great success with their first product release and has shown they are able to provide great benefits to women’s health and provide a way to reduce PMS. The second formulation of Period Vitamin is sure to set even higher goals for women’s health.

For more information about Period Vitamin, visit PeriodVitamin.com. Period Vitamin is available on the website with free shipping. Period Vitamin also comes with a 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied. Period Vitamin is effective and affordable to provide women the PMS relief they have been needing.

Ask Dr. K: Food choices can cause fatigue - The Salinas Californian

DEAR DOCTOR K: I’m in good health and I’ve been sleeping well. But I’m tired all the time. Could my food choices be causing this lethargy?

DEAR READER: Most of us experience some mid-afternoon drowsiness â€" the “3 o’clock slump” or the “4 o’clock fade.” But if you feel groggy throughout the day, that could be reason for concern.

Fatigue often signals that something is wrong. Stress and depression, for example, often cause fatigue. Many diseases cause fatigue; among the more common are anemia and underactive thyroid.

The impact of food on your energy level is usually minor. Still, nutritional factors can contribute to fatigue.

• Not eating often enough. Eating small meals and snacks throughout the day maintains your energy level better than eating one or two large meals. Eating frequently creates a steadier level of sugar in the blood, with less pronounced peaks and valleys. For most people, the ideal eating pattern is breakfast, lunch and dinner, with light snacks in between.

• Overeating. A big meal floods your blood with sugar, giving you a temporary energy lift. But this is quickly followed by an inevitable crash and feeling of lethargy.

• Lack of fluids. Getting enough water and other fluids is important, too. Fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. Drink when you’re thirsty to replenish what you lose. Drink extra water if you’ve consumed a caffeinated beverage or alcohol. And drink plenty of water before and during exercise.

• Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Being deficient in some vitamins and minerals can cause fatigue. In the United States, the most common deficiencies are of iron, magnesium, dietary calcium, vitamin B-12 and vitamin D. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are easy to diagnose; your doctor just needs to order some simple blood tests. For most people, any deficiencies are easy to remedy with supplements.

We have more information on fighting fatigue in our Special Health Report, “Boosting Your Energy.” (Learn more about this report at AskDoctorK.com, or call 877-649-9457 toll-free to order it.)

• Fatigue-inducing foods. Milk, poultry, corn, brown rice, chickpeas, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, bananas, dates and chocolate all contain a nutrient (called L-tryptophan) that helps you feel relaxed and possibly fatigued. If you’re prone to fatigue, avoid these foods in the middle of the day.

Several years ago, one of my patients told me his Thanksgiving had been “terrible.”

Why? Because shortly after the meal he became extremely sleepy and couldn’t keep his eyes open during the football game!

And he loved football, particularly the Detroit Lions, who traditionally play on Thanksgiving Day.

He had eaten lots of peanuts before the meal, then an unusually large amount of turkey and pumpkin pie.

He topped it off with a glass of hot chocolate. I hope he fell asleep before thinking about the number of calories he had consumed.

http://www.liquidhealthinc.com/node/104 Fighting depression, the natural way
The World Health Organization defines depression as /“a common mental
disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure,
feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy,
and poor concentration.”/ Depression affects more people than you’d
think, according to the WHO 121 million people worldwide are battling
depression. One her website, Dr. Michelle Schoffro Cook, MSc, PhD, DAc, RNCP,
ROHP, shares some ways to naturally fight depression. Since we like doing
things the natural way, whenever possible, I decided to share her suggestions
with you. *Diet* – Dr. Cook feels that our diet has more to do with our
levels of depression than we probably realize. Eating a healthy and balanced
diet can help to keep everything else in our bodies in order, from hormones
to our blood sugar and our weight. Dr. Cook comments /“For example, complex
carbohydrates from vegetables, legumes and whole grains help the brain
manufacture serotonin, a “feel good” neurotransmitter that is needed to
prevent and treat depression.”/ *Food Sensitivities* – Going along with
eating a balanced diet is being aware of food that we may be allergic to, or
have sensitivity to. Dr. Cook says the most common foods to look at are
dairy, wheat, gluten, MSG, sugars, artificial sweeteners, and food colors. If
you notice your moods changing in conjunction with eating particular foods,
you may want to consult your doctor to check if you have a food allergy you
never knew before. *Blood sugar fluctuations* – Have you ever noticed if
you go a long time without eating, you start to feel cranky? This is because
your blood sugar levels dip, so Dr. Cook recommends eating small meals and
snacks every few hours to keep your blood sugar levels consistent. *Essential
Fats* – Dr. Cook says /“Essential fatty acids are necessary to treat
depression, as they are required to create healthy brain cells and are
involved in regulating neurotransmitters”/ – good sources of EFAs
include: fish (and fish oil), flax seed, and leafy greens. There are also
supplement versions of these essential fatty acids available if you think you
won’t get enough from your diet alone. *Nutrient Deficiencies* - When
you’re having any kind of deficiency it throws your body out of its rhythm.
When you’re out of rhythm you’re more likely to have hormones out of
balance, which can lead to depression. This is another reason to try and eat
a healthy and balanced diet and consider a multivitamin [1] if you feel
you’re not getting enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients. *B Vitamins* -
Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D. says on Mayo Clinic’s website: /“Vitamin B-12
and other B vitamins play a role in producing brain chemicals that affect
mood and other brain functions. Low levels of B-12 and other B vitamins such
as vitamin B-6 and folate may be linked to depression.”/ *Balancing
Serotonin* – Serotonin is known as one of many neurotransmitters in our
bodies. Brainexplorer.org says serotonin has many functions /“in addition
to mood control”/ – but because of this specific function, having healthy
levels of serotonin in your brain can help you fight depression. Serotonin
levels can be altered in many ways including exercise and exposure to
sunlight, as well as supplementing with vitamins and herbs. Dr. Cook gives a
few examples of things to consider supplementing with to increase your
serotonin levels on her website, such as: /“vitamin D [2] daily can help
with depression, because it helps the body make serotonin”/ and /“it (St.
John’s Wort) also helps raise serotonin levels in the brain.”/ Depression
is a serious matter and should be dealt with as quickly and consistently as
possible. The WHO lists social stigma surrounding mental disorders as one of
the reasons people don’t seek help for their depression. While these
natural suggestions for dealing with depression may not work for everyone,
there are still lots of forms of treatment available and you should consult
your doctor if you, or someone you know, is showing signs of depression.

Roger Clemens trial: Team doctor disputes pitcher’s statements on injections - Washington Post

The strength coach for Roger Clemens would not have had access to or the authority to give the star pitcher injections, according to testimony from a team doctor Thursday in the baseball legend’s perjury trial.

Clemens told Congress in a 2008 deposition that he was routinely injected with vitamin B12 by his strength coach and that four or five syringes of the liquid vitamin were “already lined up ready to go” after baseball games.

But a doctor for one of Clemens’s former teams, the Houston Astros, testified that his ballplayers were never provided with such injections because he considered the vitamin ineffective. He also said he never saw pre-loaded needles in the clubhouse.

The testimony by David Lintner, the Astros’ doctor, began to lay the groundwork for prosecutors who are trying to prove that Clemens obstructed Congress when he described under oath the injections he received from strength coach Brian McNamee.

Clemens is accused of committing perjury, making false statements and obstructing Congress when he denied ever having taken performance-enhancing drugs under questioning by House investigators in depositions and lawmakers at a nationally televised hearing.

Under cross-examination, Lintner agreed that Clemens would not necessarily have known that strength coaches and athletic trainers were not authorized to give injections. During the three seasons he worked with Clemens, Lintner also said he saw no outward signs that the powerhouse pitcher was using steroids.

Federal prosecutors later called a steroid expert from the Drug Enforcement Agency to suggest that Clemens could have avoided detection, but still helped his recovery, by taking a minimal dosage of the banned substances.

Jurors heard briefly from Brian Cashman, general manager of the New York Yankees, who is expected to testify Thursday afternoon about Clemens’s performance on the team and his relationship with McNamee, who was put on the Yankees’ payroll at Clemens’s request.

Cashman, a star baseball player at Georgetown Prep and Catholic University, made one blunder on the witness stand when he testified that he had won five World Series tities as general manager. He quickly amended the number.

“Correction,” he told assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Durham. “It was four.”

After the court broke for lunch, Cashman told reporters “I wish it was five.”

http://www.liquidhealthinc.com/node/103 Spotlight: Liquid Health Glucosamine
Anyone with joint pain knows that relief from the discomfort is a major
thing, so finding a product that provides help is a big deal, so I’ve
decided that this week’s spotlight will be on our very popular Liquid
Health Glucosamine supplement. One of the first products developed by Liquid
Health, our glucosamine msm and chondroitin combination has helped many
customers over the years. This product combines 3 simple ingredients for big
help in dealing with sore joints. *Glucosamine Sulfate (Pharmaceutical
Grade)* According to the National Institutes of Health /“In addition to
relieving pain, glucosamine sulfate might also slow the breakdown of joints
in people with osteoarthritis who take it long-term.”/ *Chondroitin Sulfate
(90%)* /“The consensus of expert and industry opinions supports the use of
chondroitin and its common partner agent, glucosamine, for improving symptoms
and stopping (or possibly reversing) the degenerative process of
osteoarthritis.”/ – from the Mayo Clinic. *MSM (Methyl-sulfonylmethane)
(Pharmaceutical Grade)* A study posted on the NIH National Center for
Biotechnology Information website concluded: /“MSM (3g twice a day)
improved symptoms of pain and physical function during the short intervention
without major adverse events.”/ Besides using ingredients shown to help
joint pain, another benefit of Liquid Health Glucosamine [1] is that being in
a liquid form makes this product easier to absorb, meaning you’re likely to
feel results quicker. At the same time as dealing with the stiffness and
pain, this product can also help to reduce inflammation and possibly help to
slow down the breakdown within your joints. While any one of these
ingredients, on their own, would probably offer some relief for your joint
problems, using glucosamine msm and chondroitin in combination provides a
3-fold attack on the problem.

Clemens trial: Cashman on stand as trainer testifies to acne - USA Today

WASHINGTON â€" New York Yankees senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman took the stand as a prosecution witness at the Roger Clemens perjury trial shortly before Judge Reggie Walton called for a break on Thursday.

Defense attorney Rusty Hardin was hoping to get more from Cashman than he did from the previous witness. Hardin lit into prosecutors, accusing them of procedural ineptitude and calling unqualified witnesses which would mean "adding two weeks" to the trial.

Hardin requested the right to call Don Catlin, an anti-doping scientist under subpoena, as a defense witness, complaining that the prosecution substituted U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chemist Terrence Boos, an expert in controlled substances and drug and chemical evaluation, in his place.

Earlier Thursday, David Lintner, medical director for the Houston Astros, testified that is was "out of the scope of responsibility" for trainers or strength coaches to administer injections to players.

Although Clemens has said he regularly has injections of liquid Vitamin B12, Lintner said he does not supply shots of Vitamin B12 to players because "it doesn't work." Lintner said B12 was only useful to those with nutritional deficiencies.

Lintner testified that he treated Clemens for what appeared to be acne on his back in 2005. Although Lintner said acne could be a side effect of steroid use, he said he did not suspect it to be the cause of Clemens' acne at the time. He prescribed antibiotics that cleared Clemens' condition.

Meanwhile, Hardin said in opening remarks that Catlin would testify that Brian McNamee could have manipulated evidence such as the contents of needles, a matter upon which Walton determined Boos was not qualified to address.

Hardin was also irritated that Walton also deemed Boos unqualified to answer questions about medical effects of performance enhancers on players.

"Are you here to tell us that steroids are illegal?" asked Hardin of Boos. "Don't you think everybody knows that?"

Cashman, who has been general manager since 1998 â€" a period during which Yankees Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Jose Canseco and Chuck Knoblauch have been among players linked to performance-enhancing drugs, was to get into more meaty testimony Thursday afternoon.
